Lake Placid

Boasting 3,430 feet of vertical, Lake Placid’s Whiteface ski resort is a skier’s and rider’s East Coast dream. The New York ski resort offers terrain for every skiing ability, whether you’re a beginner or an Olympian. Whiteface’s renowned vertical drop tells only part of the story. Over six dozen trails provide everything from gentle novice slopes to a truly steep double-black diamond drop from the summit area. Whiteface boasts 11 lifts, including the eight-minute Cloudsplitter Gondola and a high-speed detachable quad. Whiteface has genuine Olympic credentials, as its nearby town, Lake Placid, was the host of the 1932 and 1980 winter Olympics. Located 4.5 hour's drive from New York City, Whiteface draws visitors from around the world.

Accommodation choices in Lake Placid range from rustic, Adirondack-style lodges to four-star resorts and the town’s dining options are just as varied. You have your choice of everything from the ubiquitous pizza to wild game and fine wine. At the main base lodge you’ll find the Cloudspin Lounge and Deli. Up at the mid-mountain lodge you can grab a quick bite on the main level or enjoy a more leisurely lunch or snack downstairs at Boule's Bistro.

If you’re looking for something to do after a day on the mountain, Lake Placid is a vibrant town offering an abundance of options. Choose from things like live concerts and shows, ice skating, hockey games, snowmobile tours, cross country skiing, snow shoeing and shopping. Learn about the 1932 and 1980 winter Olympics at the museum, catch a practice or competition at the ski jumping facility or watch bobsledding or luge and, if you’re adventurous enough, try it yourself.

Lake Placid Whiteface Ski Resort

On the gentler side of Whiteface you’ll find the Kids Kampus, a sanctuary for kids offering a mini mountain complete with its own lifts, rental shop, lodge and family Snowsports School. For the intermediates, Whiteface offers Lookout Mountain with a two and half-mile blue cruiser named The Wilmington Trail. Don’t be fooled, though. With 44 percent of Whiteface skiing designated as “advanced to expert,” and seriously long runs, you can bet that Lake Placid skiing offers plenty of terrain perfect for thrill-seekers.
